Today we visited the Japanese Garden on the Wooded Island, in Jackson Park, which is right behind the Museum of Science and Industry. The Japanese Garden was built for the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893, the same year our house was built! The Japanese Garden is really nice, very well kept by the park district. We had a picnic in the shade there and Miles and Liam climbed on the rocks. Liam and Miles’s first session of camp finished yesterday, with a great performance in the auditorium of the Old Town School of Folk Music. Miles’s group, the Magpies, sang two songs about food: I Like Chicken Pie, and Feed The Birds (from Mary Poppins.) Liam’s group, the Egrets, did an African dance called Mandianni (pronounced Manjanni) that was pretty amazingly complicated and choreographed. It’s been a while since we’ve posted anything, we’ve been busy at camp and work. Here’s an update of what’s blooming in our garden. These black-eyed susans have suddenly come out in full bloom. In a way they defied the odds–I bought them in an end of year sale at Home Depot, they were totally bedraggled and pot-bound. I planted them last fall in the unamended soil in our back garden–soil that was alternately gray and dusty and 100% clay, like a bag of potter’s clay. OK they’re really at the Field Museum, in an exhibit about the Ancient Americas. Miles is wearing the backpack that they gave us on the way in, complete with replicas of corn, squash, beans, and a game the Aztecs played with stones and beans. It was a bit like Sorry! He also had on a belt with flashlight and binoculars, very handy in some of the darker rooms in the exhibit. The exhibit was really good, we’ll have to go back. We got hungry during the last half and kinda rushed.

We finally got a chance to have a close look at the Magdalena Abakanowicz sculpture installation at Michigan Avenue and Roosevelt Road. It’s called Agora.
