Winter 2026

We have some blog catching up to do! Here we go, starting in January of this year.

It was a snowy winter, both in Chicago and Sawyer. As we experienced last winter, the woods and lake in Sawyer have a very different beauty in winter! Here’s John by the river trail.

Marshmallow world!

Very snowy beach and sunset over Gary
The rectangles on the beach are icy pieces that I don’t really understand but seem to form naturally in certain conditions. The sun sets in the south in January – here it’s setting over Gary, Indiana.
Sunset colors after the sun disappeared
The frozen sand formed some amazing cantilevers. Frank Lloyd Wright would have been impressed!
Not too cold for a selfie! Especially in very toasty coats!

I’ve been enjoying using watercolor pencils.
We found out that there’s a knife sharpener near us in Chicago. He did a great job with these 5 knives and 2 pairs of scissors we brought him! He also wrapped them up so nicely afterwards.
Reclaiming this pair of scissors was a real win. I’m not sure where these scissors came from, probably an estate sale. They always cut very poorly but I had a feeling they had potential. Turns out they are a very high quality pair, and the guy replaced the screw holding them together and sharpened them. He did say it was a bit of work (thank you!) but wow that are so great now! Shown here with a piece of fabric cut very cleanly down the middle.
I started back in the office in January and experienced some nice morning sun through the el station

Salt and snow patterns on the street were particularly cool this year. Or maybe I just spent more time looking down during my commute that included a walk across a parking lot to get from the el to my building!
