As readers may remember from our Christmas morning post, I gave john a Chicago indie coffee shop passport. The passport went missing during the wild party we attended on New Year’s Eve but host Geoff very conscientiously emailed all guests in January with a list of items found the next day. In fact, we were both distracted by the description of a quilted, handmade jacket left there, with no identifying marks but fit Geoff perfectly, that we didn’t see his paragraph about the coffee passport. Lucky for us, Geoff sent out the email again and we claimed the passport, and the year of coffee began! Last we heard, the mystery jacket is still unclaimed.
The passport works in 21 independent coffee shops around the city. By the numbers it’s $25 for a coffee at each of 21 coffee shops, to be used within 7 months. We started at Atomix, then the following weekend hit big shoulders cafe, named after the phrase in oft quoted poem by Carl Sandburg.
Big shoulders is really a coffee aficianado’s cafe. They roast their own beans and have a lot of brew styles available.
The following weekend we went to Awake after a swim at eckhardt park pool then robust coffee lounge in Hyde park after a swim at the university pool. It’s been a lot of fun trying all these new places. Just 17 more to go, in 4 months!
