Last weekend we had a 3-day weekend here, and John and I went with our friend Andrea to visit Mike where he’s temporarily working in Washington DC. The first night we arrived late and ate mussels outside in the lovely warm DC weather. Nice! The second day, we got up, visited Mike’s very cool job site and then walked over to Pennsylvania Avenue, known for the White House being there, and then past Ford’s Theater (where Lincoln was shot) and over to some memorials. We read a lot of amazing sentiments that we felt could stand to be read and reflected on these days.
First, Jefferson’s memorial:

Then FDR’s monument, which is a long series of areas with quotes on the walls and sculptures throughout:

Then the Martin Luther King, Jr., memorial. Very powerful and some really thought-provoking quotes:

We saw some very cute baby geese along the way.

Readers may remember I became obsessed with trees recently while reading Richard Powers’ “Overstory.” This tree is an American Elm, the same kind of tree we have in our back yard. And John, Mike and Andrea in front.

Panorama of the scene in front of the White House. There’s so much activity happening there all the time. There was a fair amount of security around but they seemed pretty calm about the level of activity going on. The main thing the day we were there was a protest / call for action for veterans advocating for legalization of marijuana for medical reasons, chanting “pot not pills” the pills I think referred to opioid painkillers.

We went out for some really good Ethiopian food that night and again just enjoyed walking around in the warm DC weather. Can anyone tell it was a long winter? I keep hitting that point 🙂
Looks like a fab trip! We also stayed near DuPont Circle when we visited many years ago and I really remember the train station funnily! It is lovely architecture!
I especially liked reading the quotations on the monuments. I love (and miss) eloquence.
