Trip to Kansas City

We had a great trip to Kansas City this weekend!

There were some storms but no tornadoes. This shelter sign in the airport tells you where to go if there is a tornado. You know you’re not in Kansas (or Missouri) anymore when you get used to a lack of tornado shelter signs!

We arrived late-ish on Friday night and went straight to our hotel. On Saturday morning, after a nice breakfast that included a chia parfait (will have to replicate that at home to explain further!) we went out to Grandview to visit with Nana and Grandpa for a while, then we all headed to the Plaza area. The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art is always a delight to visit. This time there was a really tricky maze in the sculpture lawn.

From a distance it looked like there were a bunch of people wandering in a small area. Inside the maze it somehow the plexiglass panels would seem to appear and disappear before one’s eyes. It was easy to not see a panel and run right into it!

Across from the museum, on our way to Gates BBQ for lunch, we came across what may be the next sporting craze: bubsoc. Bubble Soccer. Teams were already formed for the next round but they let Liam and Miles bash into each other a bit.

After an amazing lunch that is BBQ in KC, we went back to the museum and saw these sculptures of faces that represent the different seasons, also outside on the sculpture lawn. Inside, we visited two exhibits in the modern wing, and on the way took a closer look at the modern piece below. It’s made of white blocks with two red surfaces, and the glow is from the reflection of the red. Very nice effect.

  1. What? Other places don’t have tornado shelters? I guess we’re so used to seeing them, but in 49 years of living in Kansas City, I’ve never had to seek shelter in one of them.

The exhibit of the white blocks with red was so interesting. I’m seeing a pattern in the photo that I didn’t see when I was standing there. So much to see in that piece.
