Summer weekend

We’re finishing up a lovely summer weekend here. After years of the delicious challenge that it was to control temperatures on the Oklahoma joe smoker, John listed it on Craigslist (to immediate response!) and went the Big Green Egg route. The BGE is a more otimized smoking, grilling and cooking machine, with the ability to hold consistent temperatures very easily. It’s also a lot smaller!

Just in terms of patio space, a shocking amour of food can fit inside.

Our backyard is looking very nice, due to the pruning of the day lily foliage that I should have done years ago.

The eggplant / aubergines are growing nicely. We’ve harvested two and the are very tasty.

We are continuing to work on the parkway project. Today we installed the box. Plants will come later, when the weather cools off a bit.

It was a perfect day for a swim at the lakefront and lots of Chicago agreed! It was Sydney-like there today! It was my second lake swim with no wetsuit and I have to say not cold at all.

  1. Wow! Big call to sell the smoker after loving it so much! Interesting about the BGE… Can’t tell you how many times Colman’s looked at it in the BBQ shop and then said “but I want a smoker like John’s”!!

  2. When I think of the Big Green Egg smoker, I can’t help but think about the Dr Seuss book, *Green Eggs and Ham.* The BGE looks nice, compact, and efficient. Your garden looks lovely, and the parkway project in front is coming along nicely. Beautiful weather for a swim in Lake Michigan. National Weather Service says the water temperature at Chicago is 76, which is warmer than I would have guessed. 🙂
