Queues, curves and plants

Continuing with our staycation theme, John and I went downtown yesterday. In case anyone is concerned about Miles being left out, he is very happy to sleep late and then meet friends. One could even say happier than the alternative of getting up early and hanging out with his parents 🙂 First, we  picked up a package from the mail room at his office – we had jointly gifted ourselves a hot new cookbook, Alison Roman’s Nothing Fancy. I saw her at the Chicago Humanities Festival this year and really enjoyed it, and we have been loving her recipes in the NYT, especially this pasta that includes sliced fried lemons! John and I both had decided to gift this book to each other, but a last minute suspicion on my part and calling in Miles as an adjudicator made us realize we only needed to buy one copy. It was a bit of a Pina Colada song-like experience.

We also went by the Away store and I got a new suitcase. It’s really amazing – the wheels and zipper work! Whoo hoo!

We walked south on Michigan Avenue and passed the new Starbucks Reserve Roastery, AKA largest Starbucks in the world. It is four floors of retail space. There is a perpetual hour wait outside.

Who says Americans aren’t patient?

There’s order to this queue somewhere – it kinda snakes around.

We shook our heads and kept walking… to the Art Institute! This exhibit of women artists in modern Mexico was really good. The next three photos show work by Ruth Asada.

Then we went to an exhibit of the Bauhaus in Chicago, which was also really interesting. The image below isn’t amazing from an art perspective but it shows the hospital that Miles was born in! Designed by Bertrand Goldberg, who also designed Marina City.

Honestly I remember nothing about the layout of the hospital, but here it is.

In a FaceTime recently, Rory asked what Speedy and Roux eat, so I took a photo of their breakfast today. Roux really likes carrots and Speedy is a big fan of celery.

Today, John and I went to Garfield Park Conservatory. The holiday show there is lovely.

This cactus in the desert room was very cool and I hadn’t noticed it before. It’s an Eve’s Needle Cactus.

Thank you, baby Yoda, for this inspiring message!

Later today I went on a run and snapped a pic of some Xmas decorations that have been making me laugh recently 🙂

  1. I would love to visit the new Starbucks, but an hour wait outside is a bit too much. Still, quite a sight to see the people waiting outside. The other places you visited–The Art Institute and the Garfield Park Conservatory–are lovely!

  2. Nice pics! I’ll show Rory the hamster food. The red flowers remind me of a red ponsietta flower that are common Christmas presents here… I was gifted one this year!

  3. I’m so enjoying your adventures. I keep laughing about your lack of recollection of the hospital layout! Glad you were able to refresh your memory. 😉
