Penniped Pals

Liam and I are now Penniped Pals. At the Newberry auction in the spring I successfully bid on the Wild Adventure at Brookfield Zoo, so today we went on this adventure. We visited the Pennipeds, which are sea mammels with feathery or webbed feet, such as seals, sea lions and walruses. Our adventure included seeing the dolphin show, then a behind-the-scenes tour of the Penniped area. We peeked inside the animals’ kitchen, which contained huge stainless steel refrigerators full of fish! The biggest sea lion eats 15 pounds of fish per feeding, and he’s fed 3 times a day.

We stood beside the trainers as they fed and worked with a harbor seal named Scooter, and then with a California sea lion named Harley. We also got to see the newest addition…a gray seal. He’s not on display yet but they are going to be putting him in the regular pool so the public can see him tomorrow. Gray seals have a really distinctive head shape. Their heads are shaped like horse heads.

The adventure was great. Liam even said it was as good as the Wii game system (and that’s quite a compliment!)
