Mid-November Roundup

At first I thought I must be jumping ahead a bit to be calling this mid-November, but wow, it’s here already. Thought I’d share a few things that have been spotted around here since late October.

The fall color continues to impress! In the last two weeks we’ve pretty much gone through all the bright colors and have moved into some brilliant browns. I’m not sure if this is because we’ve spent so much time outdoors in wooded areas this year, but the shades of golden to deep browns is very impressive. Below, trips to Humboldt Park, Palos Heights for biking (on election day, keeping us from nervously checking for news when there was none all day!), Hegewisch Marsh, brown eyed susans making a last minute go of blooming in front of our house, then back to Humboldt Park for a very windy day today.

We had some really warm days, and Sarah came over for an outdoor lunch with sandwiches from Flying Saucer. Nice to still be able to meet up outdoors!

The beginning of the month especially had some Halloween cheer still. People did a great job decorating their houses and even made chutes for sending candy down to kids from a very safe distance! Also check out the lollipop board that was around the corner from us!

Under the heading of Things That Don’t Happen Every Year, there’s even more to share! The presidential election took a lot of air out of the room, and considering the result, I’m fine with that! But also, Liam changed up his beard style (nod to Miles’s beard / moustache grooming?!), we watched Biden give his first speech as president elect while enjoying a bonfire in our backyard, and John wrapped up his longtime job and started a new one! Last pic is a live event they held on his last day, very nicely toasting him at the end.

After the work event, which they very nicely invited me to, we rode bikes back home but first along the lakefront. It was really warm out but getting dark early, and the lake was completely still and iridescent. The photos don’t do it justice but it looked like molten shimmery metal. Beautiful! The spot where we stopped to take photos happened to have 3 Mies van der Rohe buildings in sight – so of course that had to be captured!

And I’ll end on more attempts to capture Accidentally Wes Anderson images. This jibarito trailer has sat in this spot in Humboldt Park for years and I’ve always liked it and the flags on top.

  1. Nice new beard style, Liam! Also pretty fall colors, and all the pumpkins lined up on someone’s steps. And much joy and relief regarding the outcome of the presidential election! Now if the current occupant of the White House will just accept that…

  2. Nice to see that despite all the unusual parts to this year, the leaves keep on turning! Great Halloween innovations too! Best of luck in the new job John!
