Mid May update

This month started off with … baby geese! We were at the park checking on our favorite duck mama when two adult and two goslings came strutting across the bridge! They were spreading oohs and aahs all over and have been delighting all the people at the park. In the two weeks since we saw them, they either disappeared and were replaced by another family, or the goslings grew a lot.

Sticking with themes rather than time, John and I went to a bird watching event in the Indiana Dunes yesterday. It was really interesting seeing how much more experienced bird watchers engage in the activity – with a lot of standing and staring! We had to exercise some patience. But the rewards were great, our group saw 31 bird species! I wouldn’t say we personally saw that many but it was really fun being around such experts in bird identification by sight, sound and habit.

Last on the creature report, we passed by a house near us that clearly got into the pandemic craze of feeding squirrels at very cute little houses / tables, but then had a bad experience in the end.

Great Blue Heron spotted in Humboldt Park … on the duckling and gosling nursery island!

Last weekend had some highlights in that we were both 2 weeks vaccinated and it was Mother’s Day weekend. To celebrate our vaccination status, we went out to eat at Elske, which was a favorite special destination pre-pandemic, then a real staple for takeout during the last year. They closed for a few months over the winter and opened just in time for our celebration!

Then on Sunday, we went to the Art Institute with Liam and Kat. We saw a couple of exhibits but really loved the Bisa Butler exhibit of portraits on quilts. I just took the one photo below, but you can see more here: https://www.bisabutler.com/.

Today, we celebrated Mom’s birthday! She and Dad are in town to have a look at a place to move to near where Debbie, Jeff and Maddie live. May finally warmed up and we had a very nice party at Debbie’s place. Here’s Maddie, then Liam pointing out that his company made the water main portal in front of their house (putting into question what exactly is a valve?) Liam also pointed out that the hexagonal nut is rare. Then you can see cake and hanging out on the front porch. We called Miles and he joined us for the happy birthday song and got a good up close view of Nana blowing out her candle!

For the eagle eyed reader, you’ll note that Maddie is blowing out a candle even though her bday is in December. It was just for fun and because I bought a whole new box of candles! I’ve been reusing the same 3 or 4 for years now haha. We can have a whole lot more birthday parties now! And I got a haircut and am trying out a new color. Gray! The blue was a lot of fun but isn’t compatible with swimming – which I’m back to doing since getting fully vaxxed. The photo is blurry – don’t go clean your glasses thinking it will help 🙂
