Marrickville beer tour

On Thursday we did a usual swim in the morning / early afternoon (a bit later than usual in order to fully rest after the long walk at Manly!), then in the late afternoon John and I met Colette and Colman in the near west suburb of Marrickville for bahn mi. For readers new to bahn mi, they are Vietnamese sandwiches on crusty rolls and really delicious! We ate ours at a little park near the takeout place, where other people were playing what looked like mahjong. I’d really like to learn to play mahjong!

Marrickville is a near west neighborhood that remonded us of brooklyn and our own West Town. There are at least 8 working breweries there and many have pubs in them. its really nice the way they are set up – very casual and in full view of the brewery workings. we visited 4 breweries, with a 20-30 min walk between. at each, we got a taster tray and then sampled to see which was our favorite. then we ordered based on that – and it was great that all the breweries offer very small pours. they have a 300ml, 500 ml, and some are called a pony, which is the small serving size used in Queensland (because its so hot you want your beer to sit out as short a time as possible!)

everything was very tasty. we discovered / confirmed that colman likes a nitro stout, colette likes an Australian lager (this was the biggest discovery of the evening) john likes bitter and fruity ales and i like a medium hop pale ale. great night!
