June news roundup

We’ve had very summery weather ever since the Memorial Day holiday! Here’s some of what we’ve been up to.

We are having our floors sanded and varnished, and as part of the prep I cleaned out the spare room by the dining room.  Thought Rory might enjoy seeing some teddy friends from Chicago!

Yesterday we moved all of the furniture out of the ground floor, and balanced the couch so that it’s not on the floor.

This weekend Anne and Brian were in town and we were able to do quite a few fun things with them. We went for dinner Thursday evening, and they came over Friday evening. John grilled some delicious skirt steak with eggplant, asparagus and a salad. We had a hard time getting everyone to keep their eyes open in the photo! Miles is ‘blinking’ here.

Then on Saturday we went to take a tour of The Plant, where Liam is working this summer. The plant is a former meat packing building that is being rented out to entrepreneurs who produce food and are interested in working in a zero waste environment.

Liam worked on this compost bin.

Inside the plant, one of the businesses is an aquaponics system.   Our tour guide showed us how the plant roots grow in the water.

Another business grows mushrooms.

Growing mushrooms indoors is very weird!

Miles has two last finals today and starts his summer gig next week. He worked at a meeting for parrdnt of the kids who will be attending his camp last week.

And in garden news, the oak leaf hydrangeas are in bloom and the city trimmed the big tree in front of Sergio’s house. Oh but first a pic from my glorious bike commute!

Happy midsommer!
