July roundup

Continuing with the theme of fun visits, Maddie came to stay last weekend while Debbie and Jeff went out for a night of Blue Man Group and dinner at Beatrix, then stayed at a hotel downtown. We went to Smith Park on Saturday – always fun to be back at the local playground again! Here’s Maddie busy at building a house out of Magna Blocks.

That weekend, the Pitchfork Music Festival was on in nearby Union Park, and John and I went out for a quick show while Miles and Maddie had some cousin time watching Finding Dory and reading good night stories.

On Sunday morning, it was pouring rain, so we went to the Garfield Park Conservatory, where there was also some rain leaking in but not nearly as much as outdoors! We had a very good time watching the various sized and colored fish in the 3 ponds there.

Maddie was very interested in their fishy expressions and showed one here.

I’ve been continuing to enjoy lake swims on weekends. This morning I decided to keep swimming past the 1/4 mile mark and go out a half mile – making for a full mile swim altogether! It really didn’t feel much different from a half mile so I’m glad I tried it. And shout out to Paddy whose suggestion to  use a drop of dishwashing liquid on my goggles would help defog them – it worked a charm!

Plant report: We have two thriving brown eyed susans who volunteered to grow out of pavement by our stairs. Thank you for your service! They never wilt – not sure of the plant logistics of this since it’s unclear how they get any moisture or nutrients.

And finishing up with the plant kingdom, I went to the green city farmer’s market today after my swim and got this produce (plus peaches that got cut off on the left.) Usually we choose recipes then buy accordingly, but today, with a new cookbook that features vegetables in all kinds of Mediterranean dishes, we decided to buy vegetables that looked good and choose recipes from there. We’ll try to document the results for another post!

Speaking of which, need to run now to eat recipe #1 – eggplant (aubergine) and mango with soba noodles!
