Ice Skating in Maggie Daley Park

The temps dipped again to almost freezing and so Sarah and I decided it was perfect weather for a winter activity – ice skating downtown. So with such a wintery activity in mind, how surprising to get on an el at division that was completely wrapped on the inside with Qantas ads highlighting the new direct Chicago to Brisbane flights! The scenery was all very lush and of the Great Barrier Reef. Honestly it was about as festive as the holiday train (and that’s high praise coming from me, as you all know!)

Here’s a view from the east showing the Millennium Park Christmas tree – it is actually very large but just looks small in this view!

We arrived right as they opened to take advantage of the nice smooth ice. Here’s Sarah coming around on the skating ribbon.

Sarah had Strava on, an app that tracks all kinds of exercise. We skated for an hour, which added up to 5 miles! Would not have guessed it was that far (but I think with skating there is a lot of just standing there and gliding…)

We then went for tortilla soup and a chat, and then split off and I went to swim then get some advice on a knitting project I am working on. It’s not super impressive – yet! Will hopefully finish the project and post a pic then 🙂 Fun day!

  1. Wow go Qantas! What impressive advertising! I wonder if they’re doing the same for Chicago in Brisbane trains!! 🤣 Nice skating and I would never have guessed you’d have skated so far… nice combo of exercise and catching up!

      1. Hmm, not that I can think of although Shona will be in the Gold Coast (just south of there!) next week so I’ll tell her to keep her eyes peeled if catching public transport!

  2. The train is a virtual trip to Brisbane, and yet the passengers are absorbed in their phones! Nice day for ice skating! Nice that the area is a loop to encourage everyone to go in the same direction and you can track your exercise. What is the name of the tall, thin, silvery building in the background?

    1. Thanks, Mom! Excellent question about the building – and both my local and professional knowledge are failing me on this one. I’ll have a look next time I’m downtown! And so true about everyone being on their phones when they could have been enjoying the great barrier reef!

  3. Lovely to be ice skating outdoors ! So funny about the El..very clever…we were in the Phoenix Park yesterday and saw some reindeers locking their antlers with each other…couldnt believe it,! Hi to Sarah and a very happy new year to you all !!Sent from my Samsung Galaxy smartphone.
