We started off John’s birthday with a trip to the MCA. This cat in the style of Sue the T-Rex at the Field Museum is a recent and fun addition to their second floor.

Nice installation of a circle of levitating brooms upstairs…

And we really enjoyed the Howardena Pindell exhibit on the top floor. This is from an early work that was a large sheet of graph paper with tiny numbers written in each box.

We also went for a lovely lunch at the Purple Pig and did a bit of shopping, before heading back to John’s office for a quick stop. Nice view of Vince Vaughn’s apartment balcony (lower balcony in photo) and the lake beyond!

After a dinner of Corona Beans (bottom left below) with cilantro pesto, red peppers and goat cheese, we sang to John and had dessert. Luckily the bean club quarterly shipment had just arrived last week!

Flaming mochi!

For dessert, we hit the mochi freezer at the grocery store. Mochi is an ice cream surrounded by a thin layer of rice dough. We had coffee, chocolate and mango. Delicious!

John was very happy to open his gifts and see two new pepper mills! When our designer staged our kitchen for photos, she brought in these lovely bamboo pepper mills, so I tracked them down and got them for his birthday. Not only we’ve never had a decent pepper mill before, these are very attractive!

We don’t really need two pepper mills but they are going to make a very nice set once we get the kitchen cleaned up!

Looks like you had a super great birthday, John! World’s best pepper mills, I believe! Nice trip to the Museum of Contemporary Art. That’s one scary kitty cat!
Thanks! Yes, that cat is fierce!
Looks like a fun birthday! Very cool cat; dessert and pepper mills!
