Dublin and Cannes

We had a great weekend in Dublin before heading to Cannes. It was really wonderful to see everyone! Colette did a great blog post about the Kenny weekend and I would be sharing the same photos, so I hope no one minds too much if I link there: https://odriscc.wordpress.com/2022/06/20/kenny-weekend-2022/

The only addition that I have is that John and I went to the Museum of Literature Ireland and saw a first edition of Ulysses, James Joyce’s notebooks, and a very cool set of frames with items included that each represent a chapter of Ulysses. The pieces reminded me a lot of the Joseph Cornell boxes at the Art Institute of Chicago (always a favorite gallery to visit there!)

We flew to Monday in Cannes on Monday for the advertising festival that took place all along the waterfront, which is named La Croisette because of its crescent shape. We stayed in the east end of the city, with a really lovely public beach, Plage Zemenhof, a five minute walk away.

John and I started off our first morning in Cannes with a swim at Zamenhof Beach. Amazing water there! Some of its praises I observed and repeated all week include: warmer than Lake Michigan, more refreshing than the Gulf of Mexico, no dangerous creatures (that I was warned of anyway), and that delightful saltwater buoyancy that makes treading water effortless with an occasional arm or leg swirl.

The beach also has a library program set up – called Pages a la Plage! The windows in this building open to a lending library that also seems to have a summer reading program. Chicago Park District + Public Library – you could do this! Books at the Beach!

Our house was called Serpolette and the number 15 was easy to remember: 15 in French quinze sounds like Cannes (ok maybe just with my accent!)

Putting these into a collage because it’s really more about the abundance and variety of apartment buildings, but near the beach and throughout Cannes there are so many of these apartment buildings with balconies of various sizes, shapes and layouts. A roll out shade is common too.

On the last day of the conference, I headed into the center of Cannes to take a walk then meet John for dinner. The awards ceremonies took place from 7-9pm every evening, so we would meet up with his colleagues for dinner after. This lead to some very late nights – which were a lot of fun despite being kinda shocking as a contrast from our usual awake / askeep schedule! On the last day, Friday, this photo was taken at 8pm and you can see how high the sun is. There’s a walkway out into the harbor called the Josephone Baker Jetty. From there, the view of the sea, yachts and helicopter landing pad is impressive!

Cannes is definitely a movie town, with the big film festival also a huge draw in summer. This mural (terrible angle!) shows moments in film history. Shortly after this, I met John for a lovely dinner of oysters, mussels and sea bream. Then we got some gelato on the walk home, great last night in Cannes!
