Day 2, birthday in NOLA

For John’s birthday we tried to fit in several of his favorite things. After coffee to start, we rented bikes from the bike shop called ‘a bicycle named desire.’ This bike shop is located very near the house where Tennessee Williams wrote ‘a streetcar named desire.’ Tourists are asked NOT to stand outside and yell ‘Stella!’ But it is pretty tempting. He said that at the location he could hear ‘that rattletrap streetcar named Desire running along Royal and the one named Cemeteries running along Canal and it seemed the perfect metaphor for the human condition.’

We cycled through the quarter to the area called Irish Channel.

Parasol’s was recommended for it’s lunch time po’ boys. John had a local specialty, fried shrimp (prawns). We also stopped in a fish shop to get some crawfish pies for later.

Interesting sites around there

Street names are spelled out in tile on the sidewalk in addition to signs on posts. New Orleans has awesome street names!

After yet another Ignatius Reilly reference I have in and decided to reread the book a confederecy of dunces. It’s holding up well to a second read!

The bike tour was very extensive. We went all over town and looped back around to the bike shop to return our bikes. After getting cleaned up for dinner we went out to a place called Paladar 551 where Miles took Selfies and then a picture of us.

All in all a very nice start to my favorite part of the year – when John and I are the same age!

  1. Surprising to see a large cactus growing in a New Orleans yard. All great photos, and an especially nice picture of the two of you being the same age together. 🙂

  2. Sounds like a very interesting place-Glad ye were able to enjoy your time there.

  3. Thanks, all! Yes, reading A Confederacy of Dunces in NOLA helped a lot — so much takes place right around where we stayed! But the main characters certainly have their flaws… makes for somewhat challenging reading.
