Today we went to hear 4 authors of young adult fiction speak in a panel at the Printer’s Row Lit Fest. Veronica Roth (picture above with Miles) was the main draw, since Miles and I have both read her two books “Divergent” and “Insurgent”, fiction set in a future post-apocalyptic Chicago. In the book the el neither stops not has doors, and the brave people in the new society run and throw themselves into the cars! (and off when they get to their destination!) And the lake is dried up :(. Anyway the talk was interesting and it was also good to get an introduction to the other authors that we hadn’t known before. In addition to getting our two books signed, we bought “Masque of the Red Death,” a reimagined version of the story of the same name by Edgar Allen Poe, that was written by another panel participant Bethany Griffin. Bethany Griffin had of the most thought-provoking comments in the talk: she said that we should read fiction for two reasons, first because it introduces us to people who are like us, and second because it introduces us to people who are not like us. Isn’t that a great statement?
Also, all the panelists told Miles they loved his shirt. It was definitely a crowd that could appreciate a Hunger Games reference!
Miles does have a kool T-shirt!
That was a good statement about why we should read fiction.
