As many readers know, I have been in training (strong word for a 5K fun run, I know) for the Comer Children’s Hospital 5K race. I’ve never run a race before, and while I enjoy my runs, running for me has been a very solitary activity. Just me and some podcasts on my headphones as I circle Smith Park! Today’s race route went around the main campus at the University of Chicago and Midway Plaisance, and it was a really lovely morning for it. John and Miles came down to cheer me on, and take a few photos. We also bumped into friends Mindy, Chris, Charlie and Juliet, and while Mindy sat the race out due to an injury, I enjoyed running with Charlie and Chris!
Anyway, not much to say other than I really enjoyed it. The main reason I signed up was to push myself past the inertia of running 2 miles and never trying for longer — I figured if I signed up for a 5K I’d have to do it. And I did, and it was actually really easy. Roll on next inertia-fighting competition!
Before the race… coat on!
Crossing the finish line! That’s Chris to my side, number 739, and Charlie beside Chris in the light purple shirt in the first finish line photo. Charlie is behind Chris in the second finish line photo — but you can see her new purple shoes!

That’s great, Cindy!
Well done Cindy – you’re following in Nan’s footsteps!!! Really putting it up to the reset of us!
Thanks, everyone! That’s high praise to be likened to Nan and her races over the years – including the most recent one just last month! The results were posted this morning, I came in #19 in my age group 🙂 out of 40. That’s 540 out of 920 total runners!
Well done Cindy.Coming at 19 place we are very very impressed.
Great job doing 19th place, and 540 out of 920! Good for you setting goals and challenging your inertia!
Nice work Cindy! It is always good to have a goal to work too. I do have a question about the length of the race though – was it really 5 kilometres & if so why not the equivalent in miles?!
Also before I forget, have you listened to the new podcast called Serial from the makers of This American Life? Would definitely recommend adding it to your playlist.
Thanks, again all!
Races here are in kilometers unless they are a marathon… I don’t know why! The only uses of the metric system that I can think of in the US are in races (5K, 15K), swimming related distances (1 meter diving board, 3 meter board) and soda (2 liter bottles).
I have been listening to Serial, glad you are too! It’s so good!!! I’ve also started listening to Radio Diaries on the Radiotopia network, do you listen to that one!
Very odd about the kilometres thing!
Will check out Radio Diaries!
