Our front yard had a couple of tough blows this year. Back in Feb or sometime when it was really cold, the guys pouring the floors in the basement did quite a number on the front yard when they built a conveyor system that ran right through it. After the conveyor system was dismantled they built a ramp for the many wheelbarrows full of gravel that went in through the basement windows.
But lots of the plants were underground and dormant, so they were fine. However, in June, the gas company did a lot of digging and really destroyed my favorite plant in there, the Solomon’s Seal. I hope it’s still OK underground, we’ll see next year.
And I have to admit that the 3rd source of danger every plant in our front yard faces is total neglect. This is an issue every year–not just during construction projects. The back garden gets all the attention.
Somehow the clematis that grows on the chain link fence has emerged from this experience all the stronger. The flowers are more abundant and sweet smelling than ever. Yay, clematis! You’re now tied with the Brown-Eyed Susans in the back for plant of the year.
Here is one stellar Brown-Eyed Susan–it’s a biennial plant and it re-seeded itself into this pot for this year’s bloom. I don’t understand how that works at all!
