Cannes days 1 & 2

I flew to Nice on Tuesday. The train that runs along the coast to towns east and west of Nice is a short walk from the airport (well done, Nice!) and I very easily got on a train to Cannes. The view was of the Mediterranean much of the 35 minute or so journey.

I met John at our hotel, also a short walk from the Cannes train station, and quickly changed into my swimsuit to walk together down to the seafront. John peeled off to the evenings awards ceremony and I went to the public beach. Great swim! Quick stating of some obvious but notable facts for this swimmer – the Mediterranean has warm salty water (whereas the Irish sea is cold and salty, and Lake Michigan is cold and has no salt) and I wondered again why we don’t have radically different words for salt water and freshwater.

That evening John had dinner plans with the group and clients so I was on my own for dinner and decided on a very casual (and still drying off from the swim) bahn mi sandwich at a sidewalk cafe.

Chicken bahn mi – plenty of shredded carrots!

Cannes is a lovely seaside French Riviera town. it’s fun to just wander around and take in the sites.

On Wednesday I worked during the day and took a break to have a sandwich for lunch, this time a pan bagnat, which is pretty much a Niçoise salad on bread. The bread is ‘bagnat’ or bathed in olive oil, so it’s a good way to use old bread. This bread was fresh though! Between pan bagnat and pain perdu (French toast) the French have some good wats to use old bread!

Across from where we had dinner on Wednesday there was this charming toy store window.

  1. It’s convenient that you can easily walk from the airport and catch a train that goes along the coast! I bet the view of the Mediterranean was lovely! (I wonder if Marilyn Monroe knew about that?)

  2. Looks beautiful! I think it would be very hard to live lower carb in France… too much beautiful bread and pastries!
