Beans, rice and college students

After hearing testimonials from Colette and Colman about how rice cookers have a transformational effect on one’s life, we decided to take the plunge and buy one. Liam has this same model at college, he commented that it’s like having a helpful little friend around. I think of it as my R2D2 in the kitchen 🙂

With our rice situation vastly improved, we turned our eyes to upgrading our bean offerings. I read an article about an heirloom bean grower / seller in California and became somewhat obsessed with getting my hands on some of these beans. By lucky coincidence, John was sent to San Francisco during the week and had time to swing by the Ferry Terminal building, where Rancho Gordo has a storefront. He brought back their cookbook as well as 6 packs of beans.

So far we’ve cooked some cranberry beans that were included in a risotto last night. It was quite delicious if I do say so myself! Today I cooked some Eye of the Goat beans, for our lunches this week. They are creamy and rich tasting, winning beans!

Liam’s friend Eric came to town last week and stayed with us for several days. It was fun having him around, and he and Liam headed back to college this morning after a breakfast at Flying Saucer. Have a great semester, Liam and Eric! They look perfectly comfortable in the photo below but the wind chill was -15 degrees F / -35 degrees C when I took this photo.

  1. Liam and Eric, hope you have a great semester! Cindy and John, great that you bought a rice cooker! Exciting about the Rancho Gordo beans. Your beans and rice offerings must be very good indeed.

  2. Silly question…are you cooking the beans in the rice cooker too? We used our rice cooker for a while, but haven’t used it recently. Maybe we don’t know how to maximize it’s use. Nice pic of Liam and his friend. They do look rather relaxed for that cold of a wind chill! Have a nice time back in school!

  3. Not silly at all, I have heard of a lot of non-rice uses of a rice cooker. I don’t think beans would cook in there, though. I cooked them in the pressure cooker. A slow-cooker would also work (or a regular pot!) The rice cooker has been awesome, love it!

  4. Nice to see Liam and his friend looking so relaxed in such very low temperature.
Yes lots of nice cooking going on no doubt with the new rice cooker.
