Anne visits in Fall, we go to Michigan

Halloween decorations are in full swing around here! A house near us has 4 skeletons and they set them up in a different vignette every few days (maybe even every day! It changes very frequently).

Although there are some rumblings about the weather cooling off, it’s really been very pleasant. One work day early in October John and I went for a lunch time walk and decided to have a sandwich outside at a bakery on California – the work from home dream!

The first weekend in October, Anne was here on a business trip. She took a few days out of dairy-related visits to join us for dinner by the river on Friday night

The next day Liam joined us for lunch at Pilsen Yards, then we went to the Mexican Museum of Fine Arts to see the day of the dead exhibit, then had a lovely stroll around Pilsen.

It was great catching up with Anne, and as a bonus we also learned a lot about the dairy industry! Despite having all this choice in the butter (and um, spreads) aisle at our next shopping trip, you can see that John chose very wisely!

The trees are all changing here, and it’s really beautiful. Some particularly nice examples on a recent walk to and along the 606. Isn’t it interesting in fall the trees give a display of the first 4 colors on the color spectrum – ROYG (red, orange, yellow and green)?

This weekend was really busy (after a very busy week too, so we are definitely taking it easy tonight). We went to a charity event with friends on Friday night, I went to a play on Saturday afternoon, then John picked me up and we drove straight to Michigan to see our friends Drew and Nick who have a home there. We hadn’t seen them in way too long, so it was really great to catch up. We had a wonderful dinner and lots of great conversation Saturday night, then we got up Sunday morning and walked the 5 minutes down a path to the Lake Michigan beach. Really beautiful. We had some lunch and went on a walk later in the Warren Woods – so beautifully lit up with ROYG leaves too.

A few news items that we don’t have photos of – friend of Colette and Colman Lewis from Dublin stayed here for the marathon, and it was great meeting him! He also got a big insight to attic insulation Chicago style – on Tuesday we had a lot of interaction with the attic insulation crew who insulated the attic, installed bathroom fans and other pieces of the air sealing work, and also insulated the ceiling in our bike room. We are hoping to report some improvements in our winter indoor temperatures based on this work in coming months.

  1. Lovely photos!
The skeletons appear to have good posture.
Nice that you both work from home and are able to have lunch outdoors at the bakery!
Sometime I’d like to discuss butter (and, um, spreads).
Beautiful color in the trees in Chicago and in Michigan!
