The Ultimate Brunch 2010

Readers may be familiar with a holiday tradition around here: the ultimate brunch gathering of a group of Jayhawks and their loved ones. While on a Chicago holiday visit from Denver, Eric, Amber, Will and Ben made their way from Palatine to Humboldt Park for the brunch, and Chicago residents Annette and Dave came over from Roscoe Village. The buffet-style brunch included chili with Annette’s delicious cornbread, Alaska smoked salmon (thank you, Debbie!), and two types of pierogi, homemade in Palatine. We love pierogi! Miles got out his whole hex bug collection to show Will and Ben, and they also played with trains. Ben had another round of diddly-eye tunes on John’s knee, which they both enjoyed very much. Miles and Will also had fun with the photobooth program on the computer.

Thanks all for another great brunch! I forgot to make the toast I had planned but I will attempt to blog-toast. Beware: this could be a disaster. Here goes… Adam Gopnik wrote a really great essay in the Talk of the Town section of the Jan 3, 2011, New Yorker, about snowflakes and friends: two things that Starbuck’s compared in a sign in one of their stores, “Friends are like snowflakes: beautiful and different.” Gopnik goes on to say that research on snowflakes shows that actually they all start out the same but that they form into unique shapes on their fall through the atmosphere, and that the sign should read “Friends are like snowflakes: more different and more beautiful each time you cross their paths in our common descent.” So that’s my toast: I’m really enjoying falling through the atmosphere with you guys. (clink of mimosa glasses.)

Stay tuned for another group shot that I’ll grab from Will & Ben’s blog!

(weird shape because our attempt at doing a traditional panoramic didn’t work!)

Miles and Will visit the moon!

What, 2 Mileses and 2 Bens?
