Relocated for a bit!

We are in New Mexico! But first, and I guess also on the subject of people relocating, Miles had some nice news this week, he was called out in some yelp reviews for the moving company he works for. Good job, Miles!

Back to our trip, here’s a map of the route here.

5 states, with day 1 = 4 hours (Chi to St Louis), day 2 = 8 hours (St Louis to Oklahoma City), day 3 = 12 hours (OK City to Silver City, New Mexico)

At the end of driving day 1, in St Louis we got to see some Louis Sullivan architecture, which is always a treat. Then Saturday morning, we set the GPS for Oklahoma City and drove through a very damp and drizzly Missouri then Oklahoma to get there.

After a medium long day driving, we arrived at the Hotel 21C in Oklahoma City. This one like the others live up to the promise of having an excellent art collection on site. They took a lot of precautions too regarding COVID so we allowed ourselves a quick look around the hotel corridors before retreating to our room and ordering dinner (which was delicious!) The hotel was the home of a former Ford Motor Company assembly plant, which explains the vast spaces and serious industrial feel of the building. Readers may remember we stayed at the Hotel 21C in Kansas City in 2019 and there is a tradition of having large penguins that get moved around and might be left right outside a guest’s door one night. COVID has halted the penguin movements, but one is in the lobby with mask on to let everyone know what on the other side of this they’ll be back.

With a very long day of driving on Sunday, we got up before sunrise and hit the road heading west. It was dark, flat and we had no coffee for hours, but then the sun came up and we saw some interesting landscape of high mesas around Amarillo, we got coffee in Amarillo, and then more mesas and scrub in the landscape started filling in. These were taken from the car windows with some sort of tinting so the colors aren’t very true to life but there were a lot of lovely golden tones out there.

Google Maps could use some work in the central and southwest New Mexico area. We took a pretty weird route about 3/4 of the way there, ending with the last 60 miles of the drive being through some very serious mountains! I will say it was very scenic. John and I were both glad he was driving because I get a weird motion sickness / tired sensation on curvy roads (and boats when there are swells) and he is terrified to not be in the driver’s seat.

We arrived just as it was getting dark, great timing! More on Silver City itself very soon. I’ll cover Thanksgiving in a future post 🙂

I very much enjoy seeing the landscape changes as you crossed Texas and New Mexico!
