Goodnight, garden

I put the garden to sleep for the winter today–pulled all these tomatoes off the vines, pulled out the plants and filled up the vegetable bed with compost. Then I put on a nice warm blanket of leaves and am letting it rest for the winter. The parsley was still growing so well I left it there–we’ll see how long it lasts!

  1. That’s a lot of tomatoes! Will they still ripen when they’re picked that early and green? Sorry, the answer may be obvious to everyone else 🙂

    1. That’s a good question! Maybe some will. But I’m investigating green tomato recipes and made a green tomato soup this weekend. I’m going to see if Beatriz next door wants a couple of pounds, she makes a really good salsa out of green tomatoes (and she has a food processor, which is crucial for lots of the green tomato recipes!)

  2. The blog title reminds me of that book of Liam’s from years ago… not sure if the title was “goodnight moon” or if he just always said it when it got to that page. Wow there I go embarrassing him online… what an uncool aunt I am! That sure is a lot of tomatoes, hope you can get some nice salsa made out of them!

    1. You got it! The title was an homage to Goodnight, Moon, which indeed was a big favorite around here. Though with Liam anyway Goodnight, Gorilla was even more popular 🙂 I think by 14 yrs old childrens books are cool again–retro even, so you haven’t embarrassed him!
