Miles departs, winter stays

This was meant to be a second half of January wrap up, but February sneaked in already! So instead we’ll cover the end of Miles’s winter break to the present, a day in mid (is it? so hard to tell…) winter.

First, knitting. I completed a second hat using the Saoirse pattern in January.

Miles enjoyed his last week or so of his winter break and flew back to Portland on Jan. 20. Here’s a real highlight of having Miles home – hanging out with him and his friend Dylan in the kitchen!

Back to school – second semester! Also note Miles’s new glasses which arrived before he left despite Lenscrafters attempt to scare us that the wouldn’t.

We’ve had a very mild winter, so although these photos show more snow-covered ground than not, it really has not been very cold. No polar vortexes at all – and very few days much below freezing. We had a bright weekend day a few weeks ago and took a lovely walk in Humboldt Park.

The lagoon was frozen over but the ice was probably not very thick.

Always so pretty!

The snow receded into a really cool pattern on the grass areas – it only filled in the dips, showing why our attempt to play croquet there a few summers ago didn’t work out too well!

Back indoors, I bought new wool for another hat.

I love the extra clues that snow catches about who’s going where. Here on my way to the el, I could see that a stroller and dog went before me, and a wearer of some very cool boots (starburst pattern on the left). That’s my boot print on the right.

Snowy 606! Never gets old!

Marguerite Gardens on Chicago Avenue not only does really lovely bouquets of flowers, they have these super cool bird cages on display. That one on the left is a mansion for birds!

Aloha! Liam and Kat were invited to a Hawaii themed party, so he stopped by to raid Miles’s closet. Miles has already been to a Hawaii themed party, clearly, since he had a shirt already in his closet.

On a warm bright day at work, I managed to get outside for a walk at lunch. Here’s looking up at my building from the place I go for a walk.

This week Annette and I went to hear Michael Kiwanuka at the House of Blues. He and band were really amazing, as was the opener Sammy Brue.  Kiwanuka is famous for the theme tune to HBO’s “Big, Little, Lies.”  You can check it out here

And today was yoga at Garfield Park, and we also saw these very cool sculptures in the Fern Room. See more about the Genius of the Spot exhibit here!
