Day 3! Andrea had an earlier flight than we did (well, not in the end, but I’ll get to that) so John and I headed off to the The National Museum of African American History and Culture solo that morning. The exterior of the building is so cool. It’s covered with lattice work that reminds this Chicagoan of Louis Sullivan, although his decorative work tended to be more of a solid piece, in either terracotta or iron that did not permit light through. This work was reflective of the talent in creating iron work that African Americans brought to colonial cities like New Orleans and Charleston, S.C.

We spent several hours in the history galleries and it was a really amazing museum experience. The emphasis is on the talent and enrichment that African-Americans have brought to this country, and the contribution is really very broad-reaching. And also how the wealth of this country is because of that talent and those contributions. It was very powerful, spanning from the 1400s to 2008. So… unfortunately no pics of the bulk of the galleries but the last room is very cool. It has a large water installation in the center, with quotes on all walls. We’ll need to return to see the top floors of the museum!

Many US cities are being flooded with electric scooters. You pay a small price to take one for a short ride, and it’s a very efficient and fun way of getting from A to B. We had a tight timeframe (ha! more on that!) before our flight so we hopped on scooters to get to the National Portrait Gallery.

I haven’t been on a scooter ever really – I’ve tried with the kids’ scooters but not one that was actually full-sized. So this was quite a delight! Rory, I totally get your interest in scootering even more now!

We arrived at the National Portrait Gallery to see the Obama portraits. So wonderful!

Then, off to the airport! Where there were huge delays because of a very stormy day in Chicago. So the good news was we missed the bad weather but the bad news was we spent a lot of time at the airport. Our flight was one of the only ones going from DC to Chicago that day so in the end I would say we were pretty lucky. Great weekend!
Very cool water installations! I really hope the electric scooter thing takes off here (and is more successful than our bike sharing!)… I’d be much happier scooting than cycling!
Barry a huge fan of the electric scooter, it’s his new way of commuting now🛴😀
Wow does he own one Frankie or is it a share scooter thing?
The National Museum of African American History looks amazing! The latticework is beautiful. And I love the portraits of President and First Lady Obama. Kansas City has scooters too. Looks like a fun way to get around!
The scooters really are a fun way to get around town. Very impressed that Barry is commuting on one. I think Rory will be impressed too!
