Rats!

Sorry for the long break between blog posts. Our trip to Australia was the biggest family news item that went uncovered and we are working on ideas about how to retroactively post about it. But in the meantime I thought I’d jump right in with other household news… rats in the garden.

We discovered some holes in the back garden and were concerned that they were rat tunnels, with the intent of getting into the back of the house. A critter removal specialist ageeed but laid out a much worse scenario than I could imagine, rats build tunnels from the sewers up to ground and because so many surfaces near our garden are paved, we had become / were becoming a portal for rats from the sewers. But good news, there is a solution -secure wire mesh all over the ground so they can’t pop up. So we had this done last week:

They had to remove all our plants which was a little heartbreaking but necessary. There’s now landscape fabric down so hopefully that will control weeds or plants that try to grow back up. Our plans for this summer are to put some containers w flowers at the back, put down sod for grass in the middle part that in the pics shows the mesh, and maybe do a vertical garden of some kind on the fence grid on the top photo. The goal is more containers, fewer rats!

I realize this may seem like a depressing blog post but honestly given the worse and even worse news every day since Jan 20, realizing that one’s garden is a rat portal feels like not such a big deal! I have hopes that the cleaned up garden will actually be more functional… wish the same could be said about the current political administration!

  1. Interesting to look at some pics of the mesh and get an idea of the problem. Am sure some lawn and pots will brighten it all back up for summer!

  2. The critter control people did a nice neat job of applying the mesh. And you’re right, a blog post about rats is better than recent news. At least with rats someone can come out to your house and fix the problem quickly.
