Miles the graduate!

Miles graduated from 8th grade today. As readers may remember from Liam’s experience, there is a ceremony to commemorate this in Chicago, with caps and gowns and pomp and circumstance. To back up a bit, as John just said “(we) Americans have graduation ceremonies for everything, even dog training.” Having said that, why not? Preschool graduations were just about the cutest thing either of us have ever seen. And today’s ceremony was very nice too, with a few short speeches and each student walking across the stage to get a diploma and shake hands with their main group of teachers. Afterwards we mingled for a bit on the lawn of the school then went to Costa Rican restaurant Irazu with the Wests, including Thomas’s aunt Sara and her fiance Tim. Lovely day, and we’re super proud of you Miles and Thomas. Oh and a piece of exciting news … Miles made the honor roll! Whoo hoo! That means he had all As and Bs this last semester. Well done, some of those classes were really hard!

Thinking about how far Liam and Miles have both come, we enjoyed revisiting these blog posts of Liam’s 8th grade graduation and Miles’s first day of 7th grade, when he started at the school he just graduated from.

Waiting for the ceremony to start.

We all sang the school song.

  1. Congrats Miles and for making the honour role… While I knew it was a good thing, I was never quite sure what you got it for!

  2. Well done Miles-another milestone in your life.
    Best wishes-Granny/Grandad xx.

  3. Congratulations, Miles! In four more years you can graduate from Lane wearing a myrtle gown again! Until I read the words to Lane’s song, I didn’t know that “myrtle” was a color. Very nice color –I like green. Irazu, the Costa Rican restaurant where you celebrated, was no doubt named for one of the two volcanoes near San Jose, Costa Rica.

  4. Thanks, everyone! 8th grade is the end of middle school, though in Chicago most schools go from Kindergarden to 8th grade, so middle school is more of a concept than a physical place. Miles went to 7th and 8th grade in a high school, so the middle school was separate but within a high school. It’s also called junior high.
