NOLA day 1: French quarter

We arrived in New Orleans and made our way to our rental house by about noon, and headed out to explore. The French quarter, also called the Vieux Carre, is a historically preserved small area within New Orleans. Here are some samples of the architecture. The panorama was taken from our front porch!

We went to a sandwich shop for lunch. Sandwiches are called po’ boys and as you can see from this menu, there were a lot of choices!

John had a surf and turf, with beef and oysters. He’s the only one who photographed his sandwich!

We walked around the quarter some more and heard fantastic music everywhere. There’s a music festival starting Thursday but even without a festival there’s a lot of music! We went for cafe au lait and beignets in the famous cafe du monde. For coffee interested readers, a cafe du monde age au lait is it’s own thing. It’s not espresso, and the coffee is blended with chicory. I hereby allow Australia to have it as a thank you for the flat white we got recently! Here’s john and miles at cafe du monde.

We found the statue of Ignatius Reilly, main character and NOLA native in the novel A Confederency of Dunces. Highly recommended reading!

Lots to talk about here. 1. It is warm! 27 degrees C, 80 F. First exposure of my feet to outdoor air in 2015! 2. Manhole covers labelled ‘garbage’??? In a city that’s below sea level? 3. Hmmm only one foot showing for miles.
