Small things in the garden

It’s been a while since I posted a garden update, and the latest news is that there are some lovely very small flowers growing. The yellow flower below, with small buds beneath, is the flower of wild arugula, or rocket. I put down seeds for arugula twice and both crops came in really well. I’m also very fond of this green because unlike lettuce it doesn’t bolt and even when the flowers come up the flavor of the green leaves are not compromised. I suppose one could argue that’s because the green is already so bitter, how could it become bitter with bolting? Still, if you like the bitter, nutty taste of arugula, it’s really easy to grow and great to have around!

Keeping with the theme of very small things in the garden, the mushroom below was poking up amongst the arugula recently. Very delicate!

The back area by the gate has become a complete jungle, and I’m not sure where the flower below originated, but it’s quite lovely.

After their peak as creamy colored flowers, the petals on the oak leaf hydrangea flowers tilted and turned purple. They are more purple than in past years, not sure if this is due to changes in the soil or the weather or something else. Some hydrangea flowers down in Hyde Park have done the same thing, and for flowers past their prime they are quite pretty! And as you can see in the background, it’s nice to have a purple flower around when the rest of the garden has turned yellow with black and brown eyed susans!

  1. Beautiful garden pictures! I looked up “bolt” as it pertains to lettuce because I wasn’t familiar with that term. “Bolt” used as a verb means to suddenly run away, and one would not expect lettuce to do that. So it means “go to seed” pretty much. Last year I planted parsley, and it was good for a while, but then put all of its energy into one ugly tough stem. Ah, now I know what it was doing: bolting.
