enormous pair of pants made of used tea bags hanging from the ceiling in Lynn's Paradise Cafe. Wow.
I just loved the Chattanooga Choo Choo
Shell doesn't talk this nicely to us in Chicago!
Part of Cumberland Island's human history. The Carnegie family owned a large mansion on the island, which was abandoned and fell to ruins after the depression. These cars were also abandoned. Now only park service cars are allowed onto the island.
Great beach! It was really windy.
We found this dead fish on the beach. It was about 1 foot wide by 2 feet long.
Maritime forest–MAGICAL!!!
Swamp prairie at Okefenoke. The little patch of "land" in the bottom right is actually a floating bit of land–not connected to the ground. I'm not sure what ground even means in a swamp. There is peat under the water surface in this swamp!
Although Okefenoke is full of alligators, this is the only (live) one we saw. It was a really cold day so all the others were all seeking heat in the muddy bottoms of the swamp. This one had the sensibility of a cat–the best way to heat up is to lie in the sun.
Miles and John in the tandem kayak on the swamp in the Francis Marion forest, South Carolina.
The high tannin content in the swamp water (this is related to the peat, I hear) makes for incredible reflections in the water.
Looks like a land artist was here!
Bathrooms at Sewee Restaurant just north of Charleston, South Carolina. The He and She is a reference to the he-crab and she-crab, local specialties. Well, the he-crab is an animal one shouldn't eat, and the she-crab is absolutely delicious as the eponymous ingredient in she-crab soup. They serve the she-crab soup with a little thimble of sherry to drizzle on top.
Gotta love a public monument (in Charleston, SC) that is so vivid!
One of hundreds of incredibly well-preserved buildings in Charleston.
Sweatman's in Eutawville. We adore you.
My favorite place on the trip–the Francis Marion National Forest again!
Those are some really amazing pictures! The Francis Marion National Forest is so lovely. I guess I ought to Google Francis Marion to find out who he was.
Issac says, where are the Dead Fish’s fish fingers ?
