Yesterday I did a bit of much needed tending to the garden. I needed to get the Chesnok Red hardneck garlic from Hood River Garlic into the ground before it got too cold.
While digging around, I discovered a crop of carrots that I had given up on! I planted these seeds a few months ago and their foliage blended in with the parsley. They were delicious, we ate them all right away. Verdict on the flavor: so carroty!
I believe last year I crowned the Brown Eyed Susan “flower of the year.” This year: the zinnia. They just bloom and bloom and bloom. And now that I get how to save seeds and have had luck starting them indoors and out, I don’t even mind that they’re annuals.
I also picked the last (maybe!) of the cherry tomatoes. We have 2 heirlooms left, after a delicious snack of bruschetta with tomatoes and (truly the last of the) basil yesterday. BLTs soon?

So were you using the carrot leaves as parsley? Will have to get some advice on veggie growing from you when you’re over in June although your knowledge of gardening in extreme winter conditions won’t be necessary!
The parsley got really big and outgrew its area, meanwhile the carrots started growing up underneath the parsley. So I didn’t notice the carrots were growing because the parsley leaves obscured the carrot leaves. Also this shows some neglect… if I’d been out there snooping around more I would have seen them (but on the other hand probably would have tried to pull them too soon, so it was probably for the best!) So jealous of your garden conditions!
Carrots in that shape are new to me! They are short and round and shaped like beets. Very interesting! Looks like the growing season of 2011 was bountiful.
It was bountiful! The carrots are an heirloom variety called French Market Carrots.
