This weekend we had front row seats at the annual Chicago Air and Water Show, one of the biggest airshows in the world!
Because Liam works at the big water purification plant by Navy Pier, all employees and their families are able to enter the facility to view the show (normally its a federally protected space due to the fact that this is where all of Chicago’s water is processed).
Due to the location, it really is a perfect location to view the show! Here we are at the blue dot, looking directly north onto all the action happening at Oak Street Beach and North Avenue Beach.

All in all, about 2 million people show up to see the air and water show every year, so it was really nice to be able to drive up, into a private parking lot, with a front row seat to all the action, along with nearby food trucks and children’s play area, all supplied by the folks from the water purification plant!
Along with myself and Cynthia, Mary, Debbie and Maddie were able to join Liam at the event! Here we are after just grabbing our spot for viewing! Mary even got a complimentary ride on one of the facility carts from the parking lot to our viewing space!

It was also nice to be able to meet some of Liam’s co-workers, a really nice bunch of young people, all tasked with keeping our drinking water clean!
But the real star of the show was the jets, parachutes and WW2 planes, zipping past the city skyline!

It was hard to photograph but these two video’s really capture and close we were to the action!
The Thunderbirds, as they are called, fly at 500 miles an hour, with less than 18 inches distance between each plane! All in all, a really great day, and a real treat if anyone is visiting Chicago in August!
What a nice perk from Liam’s job. Looks like lots of fun!
As perks go, it was up there with your NYE work event, Colette!
