Memorial Day: Brunch at Bite then a trip to Matthiessen

Last Monday was a national holiday, Memorial Day, so we had a nice extra day in our weekend. We started off with breakfast at Bite (Flying Saucer was closed) which turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. It’s been completely redone inside and has a new menu, not that it was bad at all before but it seems like a whole new place now. I had a green salad with brioche and the plumpest, most darling little poached egg perched on top.

Then we went to Matthiessen State Park. It was really crowded because Starved Rock State Park, a really popular park for big picnics that is located just across the road, was closed due to flooding. At Matthiessen, the water was very high but we were still able to splash around in the canyon.

  1. Bite has always served good food, but that’s cool that they’ve redone the place. I never thought I’d call a poached egg “darling,” but it really IS!
Matthiessen State Park looks lovely in summer green with abundant water in the canyon. Bet you all had a great time. 🙂
