Graduation day

Graduation day very nicely filled up with all kinds of activities. We had 4 big parts of the day, a history department brunch, the graduation ceremony, dinner, then a party. First, we had a look at flowers blooming in our neighborhood, and when miles came over he opened up his cards. Thanks everyone!

Then we walked over to Miles’s professors’ house for a history department brunch. The event was really lovely – the faculty introduced themselves, graduating seniors each gave a summary of their thesis, and in general we got a feel for the intellectual curiosity, good works and really supportive nature of the department.

Then back to get all cleaned up for the graduation ceremony and headed off to the venue. Once we got seated we looked up miles and found out his Latin honors, summa cum laude! That’s the highest honor a student can get! Yay miles, so proud of you!!!

Note miles has a green cord for his Latin honors, and a blue and white ribbon for Greece since he studied abroad there. After the ceremony and photos outside, we went for a lovely fish dinner near the willamette river downtown.

After dinner, we went to a graduation party thrown by max’s family, who were all in town from Alabama. They had the party at a McMenamin’s Kennedy school location. McMenamin’s is a group of bars, restaurants and event spaces across the Portland area. The Kennedy school spot is held in a former secondary school, with bars and private rooms labeled ‘detention’ and ‘boiler room’ and all. Anyway the party was really fun, we got to chat with some parents and graduates and all had a great time! All told we were out 12 hours that day and it was a really great way to celebrate all Miles’s accomplishments.

  1. It was such a happy day! I’ve been thinking how nice it was that the History Department faculty hosted that brunch at a home. It was a gathering that was possible at a college like Lewis & Clark.
Also nice that the brunch was in walking distance of our Airbnb, and we could see all the lovely flowers blooming in the neighborhood. Every home had flowers!

  2. Great pics and post! Realising we should have been in on the graduation card thing… our bad! Graduation WhatsApp message instead! Looks like you all had a really fun time. I’m wondering if Liam very deliberately packed his Uni of Illinois jumper by the way!!

    1. Shout out for WhatsApp messages too! Yes we discussed Liam’s possibly hostile other college jumper. On the other hand it quickly identified him as Miles’s brother!

  3. It certainly looks like ye had a really great celebration for Miles graduation 👨‍🎓 congrats again Miles, the photos really capture the excitement & how proud you all are! Great to have all the gang there to celebrate 🎉
